MEET THE BEING WITH TEAM

Meet the Wellington-based team Rachel Kan and Arya. Rachel is a specialist in psychiatric assessment and treatment for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and ADHD.

Rachel Kan

Rachel specialises in psychiatric assessment and treatment with parents and infants through to 65-year-olds.

Rachel studied medicine at the University of Otago and trained in psychiatry in Palmerston North for two years before moving to Wellington to complete her adult mental health training. Since then, she has worked in a range of public mental health services in New Zealand, including maternal, intellectual disability, drug and alcohol, rehabilitation, and infant, child and adolescent mental health services.

She completed a diploma in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) with Massey University in 2015 and later completed subspecialty training in infant, child and adolescent mental health, believing that early intervention is vital.

Rachel is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP).

Arya Profile - Being With

Arya

Arya is an emotional support dog available to join Being With sessions for teenagers and adults upon request on certain days (at no extra cost). She is a cute spoodle and has experience assisting Rachel’s work with teenagers while working in a child adolescent mental health service.

For dog lovers, she is a valuable support. Arya specialises in providing sensory regulation (she is very soft and loves pats), and at times may offer some comic relief and entertainment. She has completed several obedience classes.

Rachel admits that clients are often more excited to see Arya than her.
